Who edits your films?
So much of the look and feel of Behold Films comes down to the editing. I work together with an amazingly, talented editor to get each film looking and feeling right. For this reason we are rarely ever asked for changes to be made once the final film is finished. Utilizing a full-time editor helps me to be in the lab working on new techniques, finding new tracks, and creating custom film assets that will make your film even more immersive.
What is your most popular film?
Most couples in 2022 booked either the Highlight or the Story. If you're planning on personal vows and expecting awesome speeches, the Story is a good choice. It's similar to the highlight in its length and pacing but the dialogue is added in like you would add seasoning to a dish, it's just the right amount to elevate the film.
How would you describe your style?
I aim to capture the essence of the wedding day in a naturalistic and artistic fashion. Naturalistic in that I prefer images and scenes that feel grounded and natural. Artistic in that I like the world that I capture to have a slightly surreal, dreamy quality.
What will the experience be like the day of the wedding?
I may have heavy feet but I like to think of myself like a ninja on a wedding day. I'm a minimalist with a small foot print. I go the extra mile even picking out tripods that don't have flashy red branding (you'd be surprised how difficult this is).
Not really a question, but I'm afraid of looking awkward on camera...
No worries! Most couples that i've worked with are not professional actors. The best tip I have is to forget the cameras and be as present as possible. On my side of the camera, I try to look for the most flattering angles and the most natural emotions.
Do you film all your weddings?
No, I film about 30-35 weddings a year and a small team of associate cinematographers handle the remaining 15-20. Each of my associates are talented cinematographers who are well versed in the the art of creating beautiful images. From there it's all about training them to replicate my style.
Who picks the song?
You pick the song, but preferably from my list of recommended songs. If you have a song that you prefer to use that is unable to be licensed, keep in mind that there may be issues in sharing your film on certain social platforms.
What is the turn-around time for a wedding highlight film?
4-6 weeks for most weddings, 6-12 weeks for weddings taking place in September - November.
How well do you work with photographers?
I enjoy working with photographers, especially those who may prefer action, movement, and real moments. I see the relationship as mostly symbiotic. Photographers need to take center stage and direct people. That helps a film-maker fade into the background and hunt for spontaneous moments. Photographers prefer centered, symmetrical shots, film-makers utilize the left and right side of their frame for visual story-telling. Photographers often shoot full-length so that you can take your time to scan through the rich detail in every photo. Film-makers are often shooting tighter to the subject so that you can feel more immersed in the action and emotion of the day. On a good portrait session, i'm working off the photographer's poses but cropping into close details on the hands, the eyes, the waist. And when I direct video-specific shots the photographer has the opportunity to capture more movement in their photos. When it works well, it's a beautiful thing!
Will you travel?
Yes, but it's getting harder now that I have a kid!
